Uninterrupted Care: Trinity Power’s Turnkey Solution for a High-Stakes Hospital Load Test

When it comes to critical infrastructure, few places demand reliability like a hospital. Recently, Trinity Power was called in to support a major power solutions provider with a high-stakes generator load test at a major healthcare facility in Western Canada. The goal? To ensure the facility’s 12.47 kV backup generators—essential life safety systems—could perform under full load conditions.

This wasn’t your average job. The testing required two phases: 6 MW for 8 hours and 12 MW for 2 hours. The complexity of the setup, combined with the hospital’s tight urban footprint, meant the client needed a partner with deep expertise, a vast equipment inventory, and the ability to execute flawlessly. That’s where Trinity came in.

Planning for this project spanned over six years, involving multiple site visits, revisions, and coordination with hospital staff and contractors. The site itself posed unique challenges: limited space for staging, road closures, and the need for precise logistics to avoid disrupting hospital operations.

Trinity Power delivered a turnkey solution, mobilizing equipment from across North America. Each 6 MW setup included:

350 ft of 15kV cable routed through hospital corridors
15kV splitters and fused disconnects
2 x 7MVA 12.47kV–480V transformers
Low-voltage camlock connections into standalone disconnects and load banks

This configuration allowed the systems to run independently or together, meeting the full 12 MW requirement. Trinity also provided detailed single-line drawings, accurate site measurements, and coordinated crane lifts and pad space planning.

On-site, Trinity managed critical services including:

A 270-ton crane to position two 34,000 lb transformers
Forklift operations in tight spaces
Technical oversight to ensure everything ran smoothly

The result? A successful test that validated the hospital’s emergency power systems, ensured regulatory compliance, and protected patient safety. For the client, Trinity Power’s execution reinforced their reputation for reliability and technical excellence in complex environments.
