Trinity Powers Hamilton Marina Upgrades

Sunshine, a cool breeze and the gentle lapping of waves: nothing beats getting out on a boat to escape the heat of a Southern Ontario summer — or to make the most of it. With amenities that include green space, hot showers and a fuel dock, Harbour West Marina, on the shores of Lake Ontario’s Hamilton Harbour, is dedicated to helping recreational boaters enjoy everything the activity has to offer.

To fulfill that mission, the marina is upgrading and expanding its docks, and Trinity Power’s NEW Ontario branch has the privilege of being involved.

Heading up the project is an Ontario-based manufacturing company that specializes in floating dock design and construction. Established in 1977 as a backyard welding shop, the company now runs a 24,000 square foot manufacturing facility. This client has been in the floating dock business since 1988, and their commitment to excellence in design has established their floating dock system as the industry standard in the North.

The company contacted Trinity Power to provide temporary power equipment that would enable them to complete the upgrades and testing without interrupting power for the marina’s guests. And we were happy to oblige.

When Trinity arrived on the scene, our client had already replaced the old docks with the new floating dock system, which included power pedestals (boat plug-in stations that power operations like bilge pumping and battery charging). The dock was being fed from transformers on shore, but the main feeds needed to be upgraded.

In order to ensure patrons could continue to access the power they required, the manufacturer had originally contacted Trinity Power with a request for a 500kW generator. But as the project progressed, they realized that an 80kW generator would get the job done, and much more efficiently. By the time the Electrical Inspector signed off on the smaller gen solution, timelines were getting tight.

Fortunately, the Trinity team had been in the GTA establishing generator re-rent partner relationships for some time. We were able to quickly procure a gen and pull the distribution equipment needed from our Mississauga shop.

In the end, Trinity provided an 80kW generator, a 3000L fuel cube (to alleviate worries about refueling), 200A panel, cable and cable mats. Thanks to this temporary solution, the marina is able to serve guests throughout the upgrade and testing, ensuring that those guests get the most of the boating season without worrying about where they’re going to plug in.
